HISTORY OF "TRAMWAYS DE LA SARTHE" NETWORK

The decline

A convoy made a short stop at the station. The typical third batch concrete shelter can be seen of the right.

While there last lines had been completed, passenger traffic was suppressed on the less profitable ones. A new final closure plan was carried in 1932 and affected the ends of lines. Lines had been closed down every year from 1933 to 1937. In 1939, the layout reduced to 132 km. The towns of Mamers, Foulletourte and La Chârtre were still served from Le Mans.

World War II gave more work to the layout. The lines, which have not been demantled were re-opened to the traffic in order to serve La Ferté-Bernard, Saint Calais and Saint Denis d'Orques. The system even made benefits in 1943. During the Liberation period bombardments damaged tracks and rolling stock. Lack of maintenance of the layout and road competition led to the layout in March 1947, apart the stage from Montbizot to Antoigné which was kept running for industrial duty till 1969.
